Gunther: My Performance Speaks For Itself, No Matter Who’s In Charge

Gunther says his performance speaks for itself, and regardless of who’s in charge, he’s confident that he would be “fine.

The former NXT UK Champion debuted on SmackDown in April 2022, when Vince McMahon was still overseeing creative. Following McMahon’s retirement, Triple H took over, and fans quickly noticed how he reestablished both the WWE Intercontinental Championship and the United States Champion. Gunther won the Intercontinental Championship in June, and he has defended it in a number of high-profile matches since then.

Speaking with Nick Talbot of the San Antonio Express-News, Gunther was asked whether Triple H’s role as the Chief Content Officer has helped him, given his remarkable title run. “The Ring General” responded by sharing his belief that his performance speaks for itself, regardless of who’s in charge. He also stated that he has a good connection with Triple H, who has given him the opportunity to showcase his skills.

“I think I would want to say about myself, that it doesn’t matter who’s in charge, my performance speaks for itself,” Gunther said. “But obviously, I have a good connection to Triple H, because he was the one who brought me in.  I think he understood what I am in the ring and understands who can be in the ring.  He has given me the opportunities to showcase that. So obviously, yeah, I would say it benefited me, but if there will be anybody else, I think I will be fine too.

Gunther was also asked to describe what his lengthy title run means to him. He stated that it’s a great opportunity, and it has been a rewarding experience. The champion also made it clear that plans to keep it going as long as he can.

“It’s obviously a great opportunity to prove myself and put myself on the map and in front of a bigger audience than before and to earn the trust (from WWE) to run with the title and contribute to its history in my own way,” Gunther said. “So, it’s been a very rewarding experience so far. I plan on continuing as long as I can.”

Vince McMahon returned tot the WWE Board of Directors on January 6. He was voted the Executive Chairman of the Board on January 10.

Gunther will defend the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Braun Strowman on the January 13 episode of WWE SmackDown.
