Nick Aldis is looking to branch out a bit more in 2023.
During a recent appearance on The Universal Wrestling Podcast, Nick Aldis spoke about becoming a free agent and what he hopes to achieve next.
“I feel like everyone else is making a bigger deal of that than I am. For me, it wasn’t necessarily a case of, ‘Oh I can’t wait to go somewhere else.’ For me, it was just a case of my time here is done. It probably should have been done a year ago, but I decided to give it one more year and this time I went, ‘No, this time it’s definitely time for me to move on and explore new opportunities.’ Things in this business, you just reach the point where you know in your gut you’ve done everything you can do and for me, that’s a big thing. I reached the same conclusion at TNA.”
Aldis said he takes pride in the fact that he’s spent most of his career under contract with TNA and NWA. He noted that he’s never been fired either, and “takes some solace” in the fact that he left on his own accord.
Aldis became a free agent as of January 1 but he had not wrestled for the National Wrestling Alliance since the company’s NWA 74 event in August. Aldis was suspended by owner Billy Corgan for bashing the NWA after announcing his departure. Since then, he’s continued to wrestle on the independent scene, including matches for WrestleCade and Big Time Wrestling. Aldis agreed with co-host Nick Deterding that he’s open to signing with a promotion at some point, but right now he’s just looking for the right opportunities to create something fresh for himself.
“I guess that’s a fair way to put it. I’m happy to be a free agent, but like I said, it’s more about — I’ve got lots of exciting stuff on the books for 2023. Independently, several shots in the UK, Australia, Canada, going back to Calgary next month for the Harts, which is exciting for me. Lots of other stuff on the horizon, but what I’m very excited about is the ability to… instead of thinking, ‘If this was me, here’s what I would do’ to going, ‘No, let’s do it.’ Ideas that you might have or concepts that you might want to flesh out and do. I have enough contacts now and I feel sort of willing to take the risk financially to try and couple things and see what happens.”
