Dragon Lee Announces He Has Signed With WWE

Dragon Lee is headed to WWE.

At AAA Lucha Libre’s Night of Champions event on December 28, Dragon Lee and recent AEW-signee Dralistico defeated FTR to capture the AAA World Tag Team Championship. After the match, Dragon Lee broke the news that he has signed with WWE. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the AAA tag titles. Lee and Dralistico are also the reigning Crash and Kaoz Tag Team Champions in Mexico.

ESPN provided more information about the move; Lee is set to start with WWE in January, where he will begin with NXT. Lee also commented on the signing.

“I think I can become the new Rey Mysterio in WWE. I just need the opportunity,” Lee said. “[Finn Balor] told me, ‘Would you like to be in WWE?’ [laughs]. I said, ‘Yeah, sure. Why not?’ … It was something special for me. It’s my challenge to learn more about promos. You will never finish learning in pro wrestling. But every time you wrestle, you learn. But about promos, it’s something new for me. I would like to learn something new, how to become not just a wrestler — an artist.”

WWE’s Head of Talent Strategy and Operations James Kimball also commented by calling Lee a “tremendous talent” and stating that he will add value to the NXT roster. Kimball also noted that Lee’s signing is “reflective of WWE’s renewed emphasis on globalizing our talent pipeline with Latin America positioned as a focal market.”

Triple H, WWE’s Chief Content Officer, also responded to the news.

Per Luchablog, Lee and his brother Dralistico had a WWE tryout after Lee competed as part of the AEW World Trios Championship Tournament on the August 17 episode of AEW Dynamite. Dralistico didn’t get signed, and he went on to wrestle at ROH Final Battle. He then competed on the December 23 episode of AEW Rampage. However, WWE brought Lee back in for a second tryout, and he ultimately got a deal.

During his time with ROH, Lee held the ROH World Television Championship and Tag Team Championship. He has also competed for CMLL, where he held the World Welterweight and Lightweight titles. Additionally, he has held the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, among other accolades.

Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler won the titles on the October 16, 2021, episode of AEW Dynamite when they beat The Lucha Bros. FTR’s first run with the AAA gold is now the fourth-longest reign in the title’s lineage at approximately 438 days.

FTR recently lost the ROH World Tag Team Championship to The Briscoes at ROH Final Battle in a Double Dog Collar match. They are still the reigning IWGP World Tag Team Champions and will return to New Japan to defend against Hirooki Goto and Yoshi-Hashi at Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4.
