Kevin Owens: John Cena Texted Me ‘I Love Wrestling’ Unprompted At 1 a.m.

John Cena still loves wrestling, at least according to Kevin Owens.

On the December 16 episode of WWE SmackDown, Cena appeared on the video screen and announced that he will team up with Owens to face Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn on the December 30 episode. In doing so, he will continue his streak of competing for WWE at least once every single year since 2002. The match will mark his first televised contest since he lost to Reigns at SummerSlam 2021.

Speaking with Peter Rosenburg on Cheap Heat, Owens looked back on working with Cena upon his arrival on the WWE main roster in 2015. He noted that, with the upcoming tag team match on SmackDown, everything is coming full circle now.

“It’s all kind of circling back around and now we get to team on SmackDown, the last SmackDown of the year,” Owens said. “It’s another thing I can add to the list of experiences I’ve had in WWE that are surreal and I’m so thankful for.”

When asked whether he has talked to Cena about the match, Owens joked that he doesn’t use the emojis Cena brought up in his promo where he announced his participation in the bout. He then noted that they text sometimes, but they haven’t specifically discussed the match at length yet.

“We text here and there, but I’m not gonna say I usually use those emojis that he described,” Owens said. “But it’s a lot like that. We just talk about some silly stuff and mention, ‘Hey, remember when we had this match and this happened?’ Stuff like that. But yeah, we haven’t really discussed the upcoming SmackDown just yet.”

Rosenberg  then asked if Cena still loves the business. In response, Owens made it clear that the man who called himself “Cena Claus” is still so passionate that he randomly texted his tag team partner in the wee hours of the morning to tell him he loves wrestling.

“Oh, absolutely. He’s very excited,” Owens said. “In fact, the last text I got from him was, ‘I love wrestling’ in all caps, unprompted. I don’t know what he was doing. I have no idea. I think it was like 1 a.m., too. I don’t know where he was in the world.”
