Brian Gewirtz: Bray Wyatt Is The Full-Size Snickers Bar In Your Halloween Bag

According to Brian Gewirtz, Bray Wyatt is the full-size Snickers bar you want to crave in your bag of Halloween candy.

Gewirtz, a former WWE head writer, worked with top stars like The Rock, among many others, throughout his time with the company. He left years before the sweeping regime change WWE experienced earlier this year; former chairman and CEO Vince McMahon retired on July 22, and Triple H was subsequently named the head of creative. Since then, Triple H has brought back several of the superstars who were released by McMahon’s regime. Most recently, Bray Wyatt came back to the company after weeks of teases with the White Rabbit QR codes. WWE released the former Universal Champion on July 31, 2021, in a move that shocked many fans. Since his return, he has quickly reestablished himself as a top star.

Speaking with Steve Fall of NBC Sports Boston, Gewirtz was asked about the new regime. Specifically, the way talent has seemingly been punished for getting themselves over in the past came up. In response, he used a metaphor with a Halloween bag to illustrate that, from a writer’s perspective, you always want as many pieces of candy in the bag as possible.

“Because we’re in October, I’ll use the probably soon-to-be poor analogy of a Halloween candy bag. You want that bag filled and filled with as many different candies as possible. When an act is over, when a wrestler is over, that’s just another, in this horrible analogy, piece of candy in your bag that you can now enjoy and savor.”

As part of the discussion of the new leadership, the former WWE writer shared his thoughts on the previous regime’s pattern of releasing numerous performers. He noted that he was particularly surprised by Wyatt’s release. He brought back the Halloween metaphor and stated that Wyatt is the full-size Snickers in a candy bag, not a fun-size candy car. Gewirtz praised him as a creative, dynamic talent.

“I think it’s basically a new person in charge with different tastes and a different perception of how the business should be presented,” Gewirtz said. “I think that’s why you’re seeing all these people come back. There are people that were released, I know just watching as a fan, that at the time, I thought, ‘What are they, nuts? These are great talents. What are they doing, releasing them?’ Now you’re seeing some of them come back.

“I don’t know how much money Bray Wyatt’s making, I don’t know blah-blah-blah, back in the day when he was ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt. But to release [him], again to use the horrible Halloween bag, that is your giant Snickers in Bray Wyatt. That’s not like a little fun-sized piece. That is a full-grown piece. The guy is so talented and so dynamic that for me, to see him gone was nuts. I know in different presentations, you see like Karrion Kross and Scarlett and everything not even being paired together when he first came into WWE. Now you see that they are [together], it’s in Triple H’s vision, in terms of how they’re being presented right now.”

Gewirtz then emphasized that, with Triple H being in charge, WWE is now being led by someone with a different vision, though there may be some overlap with the lessons he learned from McMahon.

“It’s just a different person now in charge with a different view of the business, certainly learning all of the things that he’s learned from Vince, Paul has, but also having his own opinion and having his own idea,” Gewirtz said.

Gewirtz’s book, There’s Just One Problem…: True Tales from the Former, One-Time, 7th Most Powerful Person in WWE, is on sale now.
