Jon Moxley is excited about giving back to professional wrestling and his fans.
As an 18-year veteran, Moxley remains no stranger to being in the wrestling spotlight. Through his ventures in companies like CZW, WWE, and now AEW, the former “Lunatic Fringe” is inherently grateful for the sport. “It’s the thing that brought me life and gave me a kind of a purpose,” he told Cincy 3:60.
Now AEW World Champion, Moxley recently revealed how deep his gratitude runs, especially during a time of uncertainty when he left WWE in 2019.
“It’s definitely really cool to be on the ground floor of [AEW]. I guess I bet on myself to a good degree, I guess is a good way to put it when I left WWE,” he recalled. “But the last three years have been the best three years of my career for sure. But also, a lot of the mindset was just, I don’t know if selfish is the right word, but self-interested. ‘Where am I going to have the best matches? What can I do?’ This, that and the other.”
As Moxley overcame the “self-interested” phase of his career, his mindset has since shifted to a more selfless one. “I think a lot of that has maybe shifted to ‘how can I give back to wrestling? How can I perpetuate wrestling going forward? How can I just keep [it up]?’ Wrestling gave me everything I have in life. I would be, like the cliché is, ‘you would be dead or in jail’ or whatever. That’s pretty much–I really can’t think of another way to put it. I would have nothing without wrestling,” he admitted.
“It brought me everything I have in my life from my wife to my family, to my house, to my truck, to my friends, to my life experiences,” he continued. “It’s just, it’s my entire life. And if there are other people out there that come from where I come from or a place like I come from that–it could be the same thing for them. Or even just being a fan or just being inspired by some wrestler or something, if I can just perpetuate just the joy of the inspiration and things that wrestling provides.”
After everything wrestling has given him, Moxley hopes to “pay it forward back to the universe.” In addition, he believes it “will come back to me then in spades.”
“I’ve had plenty of success myself and I want to continue having that success,” he clarified. “I’m not nearly done. But I’m already looking forward to the future of giving back over the next however many years. Being in AEW is the perfect place to do that. So it’s very exciting.”
Jon Moxley recently signed a five-year contract extension with the company, which will see him take on more mentorship and coaching.
