Jon Moxley is with All Elite Wrestling for the long haul, as he’s happy where he is.
The reigning AEW World Champion recently signed a five-year contract extension with the company, and part of the new deal will see Moxley will take on more of a coaching and mentorship role. The three-time AEW World Champion has become the face of the company, and the extension will keep him with AEW through 2027.
Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Moxley discussed his decision to stay with AEW and stated that he doesn’t plan on going anywhere else. He expressed his gratitude for what he called the best job in the world, noting that it’s a perfect fit because all he has to worry about is wrestling.
“I don’t plan on going anywhere else,” Moxley said. “It’s the best job in the world, and I’m very lucky to have it. In AEW, all I worry about is wrestling. That’s my focus, and that’s a joy. I love storytelling, I love promos, I love wrestling. I love coming up with ideas for other people, I love learning. For me, it’s a perfect fit.”
The AEW World Champion has been commended for his commitment to AEW, particularly as he has helped the company weather the storm in the aftermath of the reported altercation involving CM Punk, Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks. Moxley described how he has the privilege to do what he loves and to work with people he respects. He again emphasized that he is happy where he is.
“I’ve been at the highest highs and the lowest lows,” Moxley said. “I’ve been destitute, dirt poor sleeping under stairwells, I’ve flown in private jets, and everything in between. I have a pretty good understanding of what’s important in my life. I’m not worried about any arbitrary goal right now. I have an infinite mindset. I have the joy of getting to do what I love to do, and I do it with people I respect and for people who love watching it. That’s my focus. Why would I waste my time thinking about the dumb s—? I’m really happy where I am.
“In this game, your only competition is yourself. I’ve realized that over time. There’s no other me out there. I have a pretty specific ever-evolving, proprietary blend of s— that is me. As long as I keep making that a little better every time I’m out there, I’ll be good.”
Part of the extension made it clear that Moxley will only wrestle for AEW and its international violence, but “The Purveyor of Violence” stated that he loves supporting independent promotions, so he’ll find a way to be a part of things that interest him.
“If there’s something I want to be part of, I’ll find a way to make it happen,” Moxley said. “That’s tougher now—I have my family, AEW and New Japan. But I love supporting independent wrestling. So you never know when or where I might show up.”
The ink is still drying on Moxley’s extension, and he’s looking forward to having plenty of time to face any number of the talent on AEW’s roster.
“I want to be better tomorrow than today, and I want to be better next week,” Moxley said. “Our roster in AEW has so much talent. Men and women, it’s f—ing crazy. I’m jealous of most of them, and I want to work with all of them. Now there’s plenty of time to do it.
“I’m very excited about the future and what could possibly happen. I have no idea what will happen, just like I had no f—ing idea what was going to happen in 2019. So I can’t wait for what’s next.”
AEW President Tony Khan recently called Moxley one of the most important wrestlers in AEW, both on-screen and backstage.
