Toni Storm Explains Why Being The Interim Champion Is Frustrating And ‘A Bit Of A Bummer’

AEW Interim Women’s World Champion Toni Storm calls the structure of having interim champions a bit of a bummer, but she’s determined to prove herself nonetheless.

Storm won the title at AEW All Out after the reigning AEW Women’s World Champion, Thunder Rosa, stepped down to injury. She has been a fighting champion ever since, and she’ll face a tough test on AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam when she defends the gold against Britt Baker, Serena Deeb, and Athena.

Speaking with Scott Fishman of TV Insider, Storm was asked to share her overall thoughts on the structure of having interim champions. She noted that it’s “a bit of a bummer” because Rosa is still technically the champion.

“It is a bit of a bummer,” Storm said. “Thunder Rosa is still technically considered champion, even though I would consider myself a champion. It’s a bit frustrating for me right now. I guess when she is good to be back, I’ll be champion.”

Storm elaborated, noting that she knew she shouldn’t get too excited when she won the title due to the interim status. However, she vowed to defeat Rosa and work twice as hard to cement her status as a good champion.

“As champion, it’s going to be difficult,” Storm said. “I knew when I won not to get too excited because I knew it was going to be hard. I’m not too worried about it. Thunder Rosa can come back and I’ll beat her. Then we’ll all be good. When you become champion, that’s when the real s–t starts to happen. I’m thinking about what kind of champion I’m going to be. If you’re a good champion, there are obstacles you have to overcome. I will have to work twice as hard.”
