Big E is extremely grateful for being at the point he’s at on his road to recovery from breaking his neck.
During his recent appearance on Out Of Character with Ryan Satin, Big E gave an update on his health after breaking his neck in March. Big E said that he’s cleared to resume normal, everyday activities, but he’s not in a place to start training in the ring just yet.
“It’s good. For those that don’t know, I broke my C-1 in two places, it’s a Jefferson fracture [named after the neurosurgeon who reported multiple cases of the fracture in 1920]. I also broke my C-6 and I did that in March. The last update, I talked to Dr. Maroon, a Pittsburgh-based doctor and he’s worked with [WWE] for a very long time — the issue now is that my C-1 is not ossifying, it’s not completely forming into bone, but it appears to be healing fibrously. I’m not a medical expert, so I’m going to butcher all of these terms — it’s good enough that they’re not worried about me in my day-to-day life, they’re cool with me [taking the brace off], they took surgery off the table. Right now, I’m just — I’d be cleared to live a normal life and I am [doing that], but I’m not cleared to be taking off and hitting suicide spears and back bumps because the nature of what we do requires your neck and spine and I’d like to keep that as intact as possible.”
Big E said that his biggest takeaway from the whole experience is that he’s grateful to still be able to live a normal life, noting that he still has mobility and it could have been much worse.
“So for me right now, the next step is they want to take a look at it again after a year, I get more scans, so we’re talking March of next year to see how it’s doing. We might also along the way, at the 6 and 9-month mark, look at it again. But, the upside is that right now I have no nerve issues, there’s no tingling, no weakness. I’ve been in the gym since two weeks after breaking my neck. They told me as long as my neck is in the brace, you’re good for that so I’ve been working out. I feel great, I feel like in many ways, it feels like a bullet whizzed by my face. I felt the wind of the bullet go by my head and I’m very grateful to still be here, to have use of my limbs, to still feel good. That’s really my biggest takeaway, is just gratitude. I truly am grateful that I am still here, still kicking.”
Big E previously said that he’s expected to have a full recovery and refers to his life now as the “bonus years”.
