Rey Mysterio: I Never Wanted To Go Anywhere Else, ‘It Has Always Been WWE’

Rey Mysterio has always wanted to retire in WWE.

Mysterio, a Grand Slam Champion, left the company in 2015 and later returned in 2018, but he recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of his debut on WWE SmackDown. Aside from this aforementioned departure, he has been one of the promotion’s featured stars for two decades, and he has cemented his status as a likely first-ballot Hall of Famer.

In an interview with The National, Mysterio looked back on his decision to leave the company and noted that he was tired, both physically and mentally. Even then, his goal was to come back and conclude his career in WWE.

“I left because I was just tired physically, mentally and I just wanted to reconnect with my family. But I always knew that I wanted to come back and I wanted to retire in the WWE,” he says. “My career was definitely going to end in WWE, no matter what.”

The legend emphasized that he never wanted to go anywhere else, as WWE has always been his home.

“I never really had any desire to go anywhere else,” Mysterio said. “It has always been the WWE. Now I know the WWE has always been my home. And, not only for me, but for my son as well and for my family. You know, we’ve been part of the WWE brand for 20 years. And, it’s once you get to know family, you just don’t turn away from them.”

Mysterio now works alongside his son, Dominik, and the duo captured the SmackDown Tag Team Championship in 2021. They are currently feuding with the Judgment Day on RAW, and the father-son pairing defeated Finn Balor and Damian Priest at WWE SummerSlam.
