Pat McAfee Describes His ‘Surreal’ WWE SummerSlam Experience

Pat McAfee scored the win at WWE SummerSlam, but he willingly admits that he got a little lucky.

The former NFL punter faced Happy Corbin in a grudge match at “The Biggest Party of the Summer”, and when referee Charles Robinson went down after Corbin accidentally hit him, McAfee capitalized by kicking his foe below the belt. He then pinned the former King of the Ring to emerge victorious.

In a WWE Digital Exclusive after the bout, McAfee noted that having his match called by Robinson was meaningful to him because he had been watching the veteran officiate bouts since he was a kid. He went on to admit that he got lucky when he had the opportunity to bend the rules. The former NFL star also acknowledged that he bobbled a bit when he went to the top rope, but it all worked out.

“Yeah you know, I think there was a chance to really take advantage of Charles, the ref who has been a legend, I remember watching him since I was a kid, so having him officiate a match I was in, especially against a guy that used to be my friend, was a dream come true in its own right,” said McAfee. “But when I saw that beautiful blonde hair flop, after I delivered that right on Corbin’s jaw and he knocked him out of the way, I saw my opportunity to maybe bend the rules a little bit. It’s only illegal or against the rules if you get caught, and there’s no way Charles was gonna be able to see it because big dumb Bum Ass Corbin’s arm hit him right in the face. So I got lucky there, I enjoy that moment.

“I was on the top rope, it was close up there, I was dangling, I was bobbling a little bit. There might have been some negative thoughts going in between my ears, but in the end, I got a chance to fly around in Nissan Stadium. I used to play football here against the Tennessee Titans. I have a lot of great memories here, and this one’s right at the top of the list.”

McAfee also looked back on his history with Corbin, as he described how they have known each other for a long time, and they used to talk about potentially sharing the ring someday.

“Corbin and I know each other very well,” said McAfee. “We’ve known each other for a long time. We talked about this in the locker room whenever we were both rookies, like 13 years ago. So getting a chance to get in there, even though he was trying to punch my face off and he did a double missies drop kick to my stomach, where I thought my sternum hit my spine, that was cool, that was surreal. But ultimately obviously I’m pumped that I won, and I’m gonna be sore as hell tomorrow, I know that.”

After the victory, the SmackDown broadcaster also pointed out that he’s still undefeated in sanctioned matches.
