Josh Alexander spoke with WrestleZone about his appearance at Ric Flair’s Last Match on July 31. The current IMPACT World Champion also shared some of his favorite Flair matches and said that his work in the late-80s stood out most.
“Oh, yeah, absolutely. Any of the stuff from, like, him [Flair] and Ricky Steamboat, that’s like the most the probably the ones I’ve watched the most, especially the [Chi-Town Rumble] I’ve watched a ton of Ric Flair over the years. Unfortunately, when I started getting into wrestling, it was in like 1997, 98. So what I saw was like Ric Flair [in WCW where] it was like this weird Four Horsemen era where you didn’t really get time to [appreciate and see] what Ric Flair was good at doing. So I had to go back and do my research and stuff to get a real appreciation for Ric Flair and stuff, and his career speaks for itself.
“I think if he’s not on the Mount Rushmore [of wrestling], he’s right there. You know, you can go back and forth with who’s on that. But, you know, he’s going to go down as one of the greatest of all time.”
Alexander has been open about his appreciation for fellow Canadian Bret Hart, so he was also asked who his favorite USA pro wrestlers were.
“I got into wrestling because of Stone Cold Steve Austin. I have seen Stone Cold Steve Austin versus Bret Hart…. pretty much all their matches, 150 times each. I think Stone Cold Steve Austin was the guy that really started this obsession for me. So I’m gonna say him.”
Alexander will square off with MLW’s Jacob Fatu on Sunday, and he shared his thoughts on the benefit of companies continuing to cross-promote shows and allow talent crossovers.
“I think wrestling fans love it too because there’s all these dream match scenarios of there. I remember when I was a fan of the teenager growing up and you were just dreaming about the possibilities of what could happen between WCW, ECW and WWF guys. The invasion happened. I think most people were let down by the initial part of that. But you know, there’s all these dream scenarios that can happen and now with all these different companies running countless amounts of dream matches. So if we can make some of them happen, I think it just benefits the fans.”
