Kenny Omega wants to remind people about the importance of storytelling in pro wrestling.
Appearing on the CEO Gaming Twitch channel, Kenny Omega was speaking about storytelling aspects in wrestling when Alex Jebailey, the host of the stream said ‘You don’t need working knees to tell a great story.’ Omega agreed and said that point is what made him so confident during his storyline with Hangman Page, because it was more about the story. Omega went on to say that he can’t do the same type of matches anymore and needs to pull from other places, but feels like there’s less emphasis on characters in the wrestling business as a whole.
“No, absolutely not. And that was why I was confident doing throughout the whole entire Hangman Adam Page story, that was a story about human lives. And I feel that as wrestling as progressed, it’s become less about those a lot. And if we just become physical vessels that are supposed to throw each other at the wall until one goes kersplat and doesn’t get up again,” Omega explained, “that’s the kind of wrestling I can’t do anymore. That’s when I gotta know it’s time to pack it in. But we’re going there already. We’re going there already and there are people that are trying to convince you that those are the best matches and five-star matches, so we have to be careful.
“I just feel that this entire generation is veering towards that one side of things because now that the athlete in wrestling is of a higher level, and there’s less emphasis on characters, there’s less emphasis on a physical presence, it’s almost, as difficult as it is to be that athletic daredevil in the ring, we have so many gifted and natural athletes that it actually is the easier route. I think peak satisfaction for a lot of the fans are when they do get those storylines and those storyline payoffs. So maybe some people have forgotten about that,” Omega noted, “but I would like to have the chance to remind them about that when I come back while still hopefully being able to deliver in the ring.”
