Tony Deppen uses Starship’s “We Built This City” as his theme song, and while it has become a fan-favorite aspect of GCW shows, this reaction contradicts the song’s intended purpose.
In an interview with WrestleZone, when asked about his usage of “We Built This City”, Deppen explained that he started using it because Rolling Stone placed it at the top of the list of the most hated songs. The GCW star never could have predicted how the song would catch on, as fans eventually started singing along and popping when the opening plays. Though this response tempted him to change his theme, Deppen ultimately decided to keep it. Now, because he has “put in the work”, he wants to get royalties if “We Built This City” gets popular again.
“I was watching some of the first matches I ever had the other night, and so this is from 2009, 2010, and I still have, I have never changed my theme once, ever,” said Deppen. “And my wife goes, ‘Wait you still use, it’s the same song?’ I go yeah, ‘I’ve never changed it.’ And I chose it because ‘Rolling Stone’ put out the top 50 most hated songs or worst songs ever created, and number one was ‘We Built This City’. So I was like I’m gonna use this because it’s ranked as the worst song in the world, so I guess people must hate it.
“And I got like five years in and people were just like enjoying it. And I said to someone, ‘Well I’m gonna change it to something else.’ And they’re like, ‘You can’t change it.’ And I was like, ‘Okay,’ and that was almost a decade ago. And I still have it, and I never thought it was gonna be as popular as it is with the fans. I’ve had people singing it, you know, people going nuts, now people are like whenever I hear it, I think of you. So if that song ever gets popular again, I want royalties from that band. I’ve put in the work. I’ve been pimping their song out more than they probably have been.”
Deppen challenged Jon Moxley for the GCW World Championship at GCW You Wouldn’t Understand on June 18. Though Moxley retained the title, the match drew plenty of praise as both men delivered remarkable performances.
