Keiji Mutoh, also known as The Great Muta, will retire next year.
The legend announced the news at CyberFight Festival 2022 by saying that he will wrestle in five more matches before he retires next spring.
Mutoh returned to the ring in May after he missed a few months with a hip injury. The four-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion explained that it was the doctor’s decision for him to hang up his boots; if his hip suffers too much more damage, he’ll have to get a hip replacement.

Mutoh has been wrestling since 1984; he debuted for New Japan Pro-Wrestling before he came to the United States and worked for the NWA and WCW. He has a decorated resume among major Japanese promotions, as he has won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, the AJPW Triple Crown Champion, and the GHC Heavyweight Champion. He has also held the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion. Most recently, he has been working for Pro Wrestling NOAH.
