CM Punk is still the AEW World Champion despite all the confusion that came out of Friday’s episode of AEW Rampage.
On the latest episode of All Elite Wrestling‘s Road To series, Punk spoke backstage following his in-ring segment on AEW Rampage, where he announced that he was injured and that he would need to have surgery. Following Punk’s promo that made it seem like he wouldn’t be giving up the AEW Championship, Chris Jericho declared on commentary twice that Punk was relinquishing the title. This contradiction caused mass confusion among fans on social media, even after the broadcast clarified the situation later in the show.
“The Second City Saint” stated that he believes if he had been more clear, perhaps the confusion would have never happened in the first place. He also noted that Tony Khan emphasized that he wasn’t “allowed” to relinquish the title, and this trust meant a lot to him.
“I probably wasn’t as clear as I should have been. I offered to relinquish the title and Tony told me that under no circumstances was I allowed to do that,” CM Punk said. “It means a lot to me that this place as a whole believes in me enough to let me just go get fixed.”
During Punk’s absence, an interim AEW World Champion will be crowned at Forbidden Door on June 26. You can find out more details regarding that process in the embedded tweet below.
