All Elite Wrestling is prepared to crown a new (interim) world champion.
Friday’s episode of AEW Rampage saw CM Punk announce that he would be forced to take some time off for surgery, but the company will still recognize him as its world champion. Despite this, AEW will still crown an interim world champion in CM Punk’s absence, and offered some clarification on the rules for the new AEW Interim World Championship Eliminator Tournament.
According to AEW, the tournament will be a multi-stage event featuring a battle royal that will take place on the June 8 episode of Dynamite in Independence, Missouri. The winner of this battle royal will advance to the main event that night to face off with Jon Moxley. The battle royal winner and Moxley will fight for a chance to compete for the Interim AEW World Championship at Forbidden Door on June 26.
New Japan will also be involved in the tournament, as Hiroshi Tanahashi and Hirooki Goto will face off at Dominion on June 12. The winner of that match will move on to face the battle royal / Moxley winner at Forbidden Door, and a new champion will be crowned at the event.
When CM Punk is medically cleared to compete, he will face the Interim AEW World Champion in a unification match.
