Vince McMahon Wanted Broken Matt Hardy To Do Promos In a Planetarium

Matt Hardy‘s first meeting with Vince McMahon regarding his “Broken” persona was a pretty unique experience.

On the latest episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Hardy discussed the first time he pitched the Broken character to Vince McMahon, which led to an odd obsession from the boss who wanted to see Broken Matt Hardy cut promos in a Planetarium.

“I remember getting to TV that day,” Matt Hardy began. “Bray [Wyatt] walks out to his car to get some stuff and said, ‘Oh shit, are you excited about today?’ and I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘you haven’t heard?’ And about that time, I see Michael Hayes has texted me. He says, ‘I need you to text me right now. I need you to call me. I gotta get you some face time with Vince.’ [Proceeds to imitate Vince McMahon] ‘Tell me about the Broken Matt Hardy. Tell me. Tell me, how did you come up with this?’ So well I said, ‘Well, are you familiar with True Blood?’ And he’s all ‘*audible grunt*’ I’m sorry. It’s a vampire show. I should have known that anyway.

“He’s very tentative. I said, what if I’m aware of where my soul, which I have now coined as my essence, to make it a little different and put my own spin on it. If I’m aware of where my soul has been. I remember he asked where would this character do promos. Well, I tried to put a spin on it when Jeff and I were winning all the tag titles. I was saying we’re the greatest tag team in Space and time. And I’m trying to like, create a different venue for myself where it wasn’t just like normal wrestling. This thing was definitely out of the wrestling venue, and I feel like the more remote locations that I shoot things in, the better it feels.

“[Imitates Vince again] ‘So this character would do promos in a planetarium?’ I was like, ‘Well, I don’t know.’ [Another Vince impression] ‘Space and time sounds good. Maybe a promo in a planetarium.’ And then I said, ‘Well, I mean, maybe like I feel like too there could be kind of like a good difference if Abigail touched me and brings out the light in me the in this darkness is like the basic concept of good versus evil kind of light and dark. I feel like that’s a good play on it.’ [Another Vince imitation] ‘So you think we do promos in a planetarium.’ And he hit me with that like three or four times. I’ll never forget it, man. It was so funny.”
