Work or shoot? Brian Hebner seems to think it’s still the former.
The Montreal Screwjob remains one of the most highly debated topics in pro wrestling nearly 30 years after the fact.
Brian Hebner, son of legendary referee Earl Hebner and former WWE and IMPACT Wrestling referee, recently appeared on The Angle Podcast and discussed his view on the Montreal Screwjob back at the 1997 Survivor Series pay-per-view. Brian’s father was one of the main cogs in the incident that took place at the conclusion of the infamous match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart.
“I thought it was a work, the whole time, and still do to this day. I think it was one done exactly properly done. A lot of kayfabe and I just don’t believe it really worked out the way we are told. I know my dad’s end is true, but I don’t think that’s the way it went. I think it was worked.”
Hebner would go on to discuss more recent topics, namely how he believes that today’s referees are too focused on being their own character rather than just properly officiating the matchup.
“Nowadays the refs today are trying to get their own shit in, trying to get their own spots in. No one is paying a ticket to sit their ass in a seat for you (referees) nobody is paying a dollar to see you do anything in that ring. They may respect what you do, but they are not paying to see you.”
When circling back to his father’s legendary career, Hebner believes that his father, Earl as well as his uncle Dave Hebner, should both be honored in the WWE Hall of Fame.
“I would love to see my uncle and dad get what they deserve and that being going into the Hall of Fame. That’s the biggest, the most epic place to go. I think they deserve it and there’s nobody on this planet who can tell me why they shouldn’t. For them that would be the chapter that would make a lot of people happy including them.”
