Erick Redbeard Refused To Cut His Beard When Teaming With Daniel Bryan In WWE

Erick Redbeard has had quite the journey in the world of professional wrestling.

The former Erick Rowan was a recent guest on the Wrestlebuddy Podcast to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about being paired with Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson) in WWE, Redbeard revealed that Vince McMahon wanted him to cut his beard for the storyline, but he was able to talk him out of it.

“After my injury, we wrestled against Kofi [Kingston] and [Xavier] Woods against the Bludgeons. Great carnage match,” Erick Redbeard said. “It was a blast, but I tore my bicep. I was in pain. It was a two-segment match. You can’t tell my arm was torn, but going to 4 months of rehab, I had to come back to something new. Then they say I’m with Daniel Bryan. Do you have plaid shirts? I was like, what? I asked if Brodie was doing anything. I wanted permission to be without Brodie. He wanted me to work. I talked Vince out of cutting my beard since we both had beards. I had no problems telling Vince no. I’m glad I did. It was fun, though. They took away my mask, and I had coveralls and had horror movies and heavy metal shirts. I’m going to be in the background, and he will tell the story of why I’m not talking. I wore shirts of bands I love in real life, and I was noticed. That’s me with easter eggs.”

Following his storyline with Bryan, the former Erick Rowan started carrying a mysterious cage around on WWE RAW. Redbeard revealed that it was supposed to be a rate and lead to a feud with Seth Rollins, although he didn’t really understand the story in the first place and questioned it from the start.

“I asked that the first day when I was handed a cage,” Erick Redbeard said. “Then I came up with suggestions that they loved, and they said no. After a certain amount of time, I didn’t want to wait for an answer. I always ask for an explanation; I still want to understand the reason for decisions. I get that, and when I asked why and they didn’t know the answer, I never heard anything. Just with the cage, what was meant to happen. Originally it was supposed to lead to a feud with Seth [Rollins]. Something would be meant to kill my rat. He went heel two weeks later, and it was scrapped. I got TV time, though. It got old and reparative with a squash match, but it didn’t work out.”
