Keith Lee is basking in his glory and there’s a common man that helped get him on the right path.
All Elite Wrestling star Keith Lee recently appeared on the AEW Unrestricted podcast and delved into the reasoning behind his ‘bask in my glory’ moniker, which Lee credits to Dusty Rhodes.
“I know that some people play a role on social media but Keith Lee, in reality, has never been some character, right? Forward march and Limitless are closely related. It’s really just about keeping your eyesight forward and marching through the tough times, if something gets you down, finding a way to stand back and look and that’s what the limitless moniker is all about. I can do flips and all these different things but I won’t be able to do those things forever. But the mentality and mental fortitude is all I’m about, whether it’s losing a match and finding a way to overcome or facing three deaths in my family and having a wedding coming around and having a debut and trying to blow the minds of the people and reminding them exactly who Keith Lee is,” Lee explained. “That takes a limitless mindset. Sometimes, things are tough and I keep my eyes forward and put one leg in front of the other and I keep stepping forward and that’s really what they’re both about.”
Lee would then credit William Regal, alongside Dusty Rhodes for always believing in him, noting that Rhodes had a hand in creating his “Bask In My Glory” mantra.
In the past, Lee has said he would’ve quit wrestling if it weren’t for Regal and Rhodes’ guidance. Lee had several tryouts with WWE, and Rhodes had explained why he wasn’t ready to join the company when he was rejected at the first one in 2008. Lee had a few more tryouts including one in 2013, and it was here that Rhodes told Lee that he’d improved and had quite a presence that he could bask in.
“I don’t know if he knew what the decision was right away or what have you but he pulled me aside and basically told me, ‘regardless of what their decision is, I believe you’re a million-dollar talent’. That comment touched me very deep and it really meant a lot, especially coming from someone like him. The man is a straight shooter, it was something that I very much appreciated coming from him. In terms of Dusty [Rhodes], Dusty’s just a guy that’s been there from the very beginning. He pushed me along and told me how much I sucked in terms of speaking, up to telling me how much I improved and telling me how proud he was of me and him telling me about that aura, something you could bask in,” Lee noted, “and that was the birth of ‘Bask In My Glory’ and why that’s something that I hold so closely to me.
“[William] Regal’s been an advocate of mine forever, ever since the first time that we met. So, those last two guys have had like a year-on-year impact on me and in my life and how I view things and how things are applied and how I think in wrestling and how I move and how I carry myself, all those things are something that I can attribute to their knowledge and what they’ve imparted in me, so much appreciation.”
