Edge: I Can’t Say I Need Another Title Reign, I’m Focused On Having Good Matches And Telling Stories

WWE Hall of Famer Edge made his stunning comeback from a premature retirement in the 2020 Men’s Royal Rumble match. Since then, he has regained his status as one of the most prominent stars on WWE programming. The former world champion is gearing up for yet another high-profile match at the 2022 Royal Rumble show, where he’ll team up with his wife, Beth Phoenix, to face The Miz and Maryse.

This feud has kept Edge outside of the title scene, whereas many fans have expected to see “The Rated-R Superstar” get one more run as the champion at some point in this final chapter of his career. He unsuccessfully challenged for the WWE Universal Championship twice in 2021, and it’s unclear when, or if, he’ll contend for gold again.

In an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Edge expressed his doubt about his need for another championship reign, given the impressive list of accolades he has already racked up. The 11-time world champion questioned how much one more title would mean; though it’d be a “cool” story, he emphasized his focus on having good matches and telling compelling stories.

“I can’t say that Edge needs it,” Copeland says. “When I look at the character, and I look at everything I accomplished with the character, what does one more mean? I don’t know. Is it a cool, redemptive story? This guy had it pulled away from him, and now he’s fighting to get it back. It has a bit of a feel-good, Rocky vibe to it. But if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.

“I came back to do this again. Are my storylines compelling? Do people want to watch them? And am I competing at the same level or better than I was before? That is my focus. Mentally, I feel like I’m in a way better place in terms of telling stories than I was when I had to retire. That’s really all that matters to me—how good are the matches, how good are the stories.”

Time will tell whether “The Ultimate Opportunist” wins another world championship. For now, he remains featured on WWE RAW, and fans continue to speculate about the numerous dream matches that he can still have in the near future, title or no title.
