While he’s no longer with WWE, Tom Hannifan learned a lot while working for that company.
IMPACT Wrestling‘s Tom Hannifan was the latest guest on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet to discuss a variety of subjects. When asked what the best thing he learned from Michael Cole was, Hannifan revealed it to be patient and not to give up on circumstances.
“While I did not have a ton of patience he was very patient with me,” Tom Hannifan revealed. “It was just to be patient, keep working and not give up on circumstance. I was moved around shows on the carousel, and I was so freaking young. For him to be patient with me, that was the biggest thing.”
When asked what his biggest on-air mistake is, Hannifan revealed he created the “calf bone” on the fly while calling a Samoa Joe match and got heckled by Corey Graves for it:
“Yeah there have been a bunch,” Tom Hannifan admitted. “I can’t really remember what it was, but it was a Samoa Joe match with me [Corey] Graves and Byron [Saxton] because we were all tied at the hip. I got tongue-tied and invented the calf bone, which Graves got on top of me and said ‘That’s not a thing Phillips, that’s a shin.’ My head just bounced off the desk and I’m like yeah, I will see myself out.”
Tom Hannifan has a lot more freedom on commentary in IMPACT Wrestling as opposed to WWE, during the interview he revealed what words he can now say again that he couldn’t say in WWE:
“I think the obvious ones are that you always refer to the fans as the WWE Universe,” Tom Hannifan said. “You don’t call them fans, the crowd or the audience, it’s to build the fans as a community. It’s just little things like, also like pro-wrestling, they don’t want us to say that.”
