Big E has been one of the most beloved stars in WWE for several years, but he has reached new heights of success this year; he won the WWE Championship for the first time in September. For this reason, it’s fair to wonder if he’s reaching his prime at the age of 35 and, if so, how much longer he’ll continue to compete in the ring.
In a new interview with The Sun, The Powerhouse of Positivity noted that he doesn’t exactly know when his final match will come, but he believes it isn’t any time soon. Instead, whereas he once felt like 35 was a good age to hang up the boots, he sees how other stars are thriving into their forties.
“I’ve got a few more years left in me. I don’t really know when that time will be… but when you’re 23, 35 feels like it’s ages from now and that you’ll be an old man and beat up. So 35 felt like at the time a good time to get out and I don’t want to overstay my welcome.
“…We’ve talked about how I’d spoken about getting out at 35 but I think, in many ways, a lot of wrestlers’ primes are like 35, 40… We’re seeing Bobby Lashley now having his best run in his mid-40s.”
The champion then named other performers like Randy Orton (41) and Kofi Kingston (40) who continue to compete at impressive levels. With this comparison, he noted that he isn’t sure if he’ll follow their footsteps, but for now, he’s feeling good from a physical perspective.
“We have so many guys now… Randy Orton, AJ Styles, Kofi Kingston, Bobby Roode, Dolph Ziggler – so many guys in their 40s performing at such a high level. They look great and are ageing well.
“So, I don’t know if I’m going to wrestle into my forties as I always told myself that I would make sure I was out before then, but my body feels great. In the ring, I feel leaner and my cardio is getting better. There’s so much about where I’m at physically that I’m really appreciating.”
Big E elaborated by saying that as long as he feels good and it “makes sense” for his in-ring career to continue, then it will.
“So, if my body holds up, I’m feeling good and it makes sense, then we’ll keep going for a few more years,” said Big E.
Before he turns 36 next year, Big E will defend the WWE Championship against Seth Rollins, Big E and Bobby Lashley at WWE Day 1 on January 1.
