Matt Hardy On Shifting His Character: For The First Time Ever, I’m Going To Be ‘The Legitimate Matt Hardy’

Matt Hardy is getting ready for his newest evolution as a character, and it might be his most daring one yet. The man who has been known as “Big Money Matt” will be playing himself on AEW programming.

In an interview with Riju Dasgupta of Sportskeeda Wrestling, Hardy previewed this shift by explaining that, for the first time in his legendary career, he’s going to be “the legitimate Matt Hardy” by aim to portray his true self on TV.

“Just recently I’ve thought about switching, [and] I am really going to be, probably for the first time in history, just like the legitimate Matt Hardy, you know, just like an authentic version of myself,” said Hardy. “Like if you interacted with me in real life, how would I act. That is kind of what I’m gearing towards more on AEW television right now.”

In the past, Hardy has enjoyed plenty of success as the distinct “Broken Matt” persona, among several other character, but he’s clearly going back to his roots with this next chapter. If the “Big Money Matt” run is coming to an end, his mentorship of Private Party will remain one of its major impacts on AEW; Hardy described his belief that he has helped the duo grow, and he’s confident Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen will be the company’s tag team champions soon.

“…I feel like my job when I’ve been with them as ‘Big Money Matt’ has been to teach them to be more aggressive, to be a more complete professional wrestler, a more complete tag team, and they have really succeeded in that.,” said Hardy. “So when the time comes around for them to get the opportunity to be pushed in a major position for the tag team titles, this time around. I feel very confident about that.”
