Tony Khan Addresses The Importance Of Building Up Stories, Challenge Of Not Overexposing Talent On AEW TV

Tony Khan knows the importance of taking time for a well-crafted story.

AEW President Tony Khan recently appeared on Rasslin’ with Brandon F. Walker and spoke about how hard it is to stay patient and tell the stories that need to be told rather than throwing matches out there and rushing things to television.

“We’ve been patient, and I think you saw, when you mention Adam Cole and Jungle Boy, man, they’ve had some amazing matches between them. When you look at the singles match they had on Newark and then whether it’s the six-man tag at Grand Slam or the Falls Count Anywhere… the amazing Falls Count Anywhere trios match. And then there were also some amazing matches along the way, including a main event on Rampage that I thought was outstanding with Adam Cole and Bobby Fish taking on Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus, which was one of the best matches we’ve had on Rampage.

“It’s a challenge not to put the new free agents and all the top wrestlers in like the huge matches every week. And there is something for having the biggest matches on television which we’re building to, stuff like Bryan Danielson versus Hangman Page for the world title and giving Hangman such a huge match on television for everybody to see right out of the gate. And we’re building towards huge matches on TV every week and I think it’s important to build to them.

“There’s a lot of great wrestling matches along the way too like I said that aren’t necessarily the end-all, be-all in everyone’s mind and then when you watch them, whether it’s some of the great matches, like man what a great match, I brought up that Adam Cole and Bobby Fish versus Jungle Boy and Luchsaurus match, they’ve had a couple great tags, one against Orange Cassidy and Wheeler YUTA I thought was outstanding.”

Khan spoke about Adam Cole’s progression in AEW so far, and said he still has so much more he can do in the company.

“Adam Cole, we’ve mentioned before, this is somebody who I have so much respect for and I think is one of the big stars in wrestling and I think he has the potential to become the biggest star in wrestling. He’s so so electric in the arenas, the fans care about him so much, and he’s had great awareness. He’s been on television, before he even arrived in AEW, which is great, and fans from all the world love him. He’s wrestled all over the world. I think he’s somebody who I already believe could be a top star and who I still believe has so much to bring as a new free agent who just came in.”
