Since he won the title in September, Big E has successfully defended the title a few times, including a huge win over Drew McIntyre at WWE Crown Jewel. But this contest will be the first pay-per-view title defense for “The Powerhouse of Positivity” since that match, as he has recently been feuding with Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens on SmackDown and RAW, respectively. For Rollins, this bout will mark a major opportunity for “The Revolutionary,” who has been aiming to regain his spot as the champion for some time now.
Update: in the main event of the November 30 episode of WWE RAW, Kevin Owens earned a spot in the title bout at WWE Day 1 when he defeated Big E. Late in the bout, Owens attacked Rollins, who was at ringside to watch the match. “The Drip God” subsequently slid into the ring and began attacking Owens. His actions prompted the referee to call for the bell and give Owens the win via disqualification. As a result, the contest at WWE Day 1 will be a Triple Threat Match between Owens, Rollins, and Big E, and the champion’s task of defending his title just got much more difficult.

WWE Day 1 will take place on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2022, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s the first pay-per-view to have a New Year’s theme since the New Year’s Revolution in 2007, and it indirectly replaces the TLC pay-per-view that had been the annual December event since 2009.
WrestleZone will provide more information about WWE Day 1 as it becomes available.
