Becky Lynch Explains Why She Didn’t Push Back On Turning Heel, How ‘Big Time Becks’ Contrasts ‘The Man’

Becky Lynch says she didn’t see herself playing a heel when she returned to WWE television, but she’s embracing the role and looks to become everything ‘The Man’ was not.

During an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Becky Lynch was asked if the plan was always to return as a heel. Lynch ultimately returned at SummerSlam as a surprise competitor and says she personally saw herself as a fan favorite telling a comeback story.

“I wasn’t aware of that until quite recently. And so I thought to myself, well there’s no way. There’s no way that Vince would want me back as heel. I’m a new mom, left on top, it’s [a] comeback story. I had all these different comeback pitches of you know falling and trials and tribulations and Rocky montages and then it was switched to, ‘Well, we want you back as a heel,’ which I understand. Once you’re at the top, once you’ve accomplished everything and we have all these new people coming up, champing at the bit, then one it gives them a giant mountain to overcome and two, it’s something that we haven’t seen before. We haven’t seen me [as a heel].

Asked why she didn’t push back against the idea, Lynch said she wanted to try it out and it added a surprise factor.

“You know, let me see how this will go. Let’s work with this. No one will see it coming,” Lynch said.

Asked about how she views her new persona, Lynch explained that she wants to be everything she wasn’t before. Lynch added that she can still throw in a bit of “The Man” from time to time, but her focus is on getting the fans to react in the right way now.

“‘The Man’ was understated, she’d never back down from a fight. She told things like it was, she was very to the point. And now Big Time Becks is over the top. If she feels like fighting, she will, but maybe today isn’t the time. And she’ll use nefarious means if she has to, whereas The Man was always true and right and righteous. But now I’ll do whatever it takes.

“I can kind of bust [“The Man”] out whenever I want to. You know what I mean, I feel like I busted a little bit of it out on Monday night, if anybody was tuning in on Monday. I busted a little bit out and then I switched and flipped the page. And so that’s something that I can always go back to. But for now, this is an exploration of something new, and that’s exciting to sink my teeth in and find different motivations and different ways to her under people’s skin and different ways to elevate myself and other people. And it’s an exciting opportunity because when you’re a babyface, and you’re a good guy, it’s all about you, right? And so being a heel, you make it look like it’s all about you. But really the end goal is to make sure is to make sure that people want to see that good guy beat the ever-living crap out of you at the end of the day. And so that’s exciting because we have such a fresh group of talent coming up, an extraordinary group. I’m so excited about everybody that I have to face.”

Becky Lynch is currently feuding with Liv Morgan on WWE RAW, and defeated Charlotte Flair in an inter-promotional match at Survivor Series on Sunday.
