MJF picked up a win over Darby Allin with a side headlock takedown… but it was set up with a cheap shot after a great opening bout.
MJF versus Darby Allin opened up the AEW Full Gear pay-per-view, and the two certainly started the show off hot with some big spots and near falls that popped the crowd. Check out a full recap of the match courtesy of our live coverage post by Dominic DeAngelo:
MJF vs. Darby Allin (with Sting)
Darby has a vignette hearkening back to his traumatizing moment with his uncle and the DUI. A masked MJF is the passenger. Sting only comes out to the entryway with Darby. MJF starts off with several headlock takeover attempts. An amazing set of pin attempts occur before both men trade arm drags and we reach a stalemate and then a round of applause. Soon, MJF sucker punches Darby. Allin goes to the outside and MJF lariats him. He Fargo struts. MJF talks smack to a fan and it allows Darby to tope.
Darby goes to Coffin Drop Max on the apron but MJF rolls out of the way and Darby hits the apron crisp. Back in the ring, MJF elbow drops the back of Darby and covers for two. Darby goes for a spinning headscissors but Max catches him with a modified backbreaker for another near fall. Hard hammer throws in the corner to Darby. Darby gives him a receipt with one of his own. Big dueling chants. A backbreaker and then a back slam for a two count by MJF. Max hits a second one and he hurts his knee doing it.
MJF goes for a superplex, but Darby bites him. They jock for position and Darby hits a stunner off the second rope. “Darby” chants. He soon goes for the Coffin Drop, but before Darby attempts Max rolls out of the way. He catches Darby with a headlock takedown for another pin, but kick out. Darby goes for a rana, but Max catches him with a powerbomb backbreaker (you can hear Darby say “oh shit”). Max hits him and Darby eggs him on to do so. Max bites him and soon thumbs him to the eye. Darby low dropkicks him. Darby goes for a Code Red, but Max gets a nifty powerbomb. Two count.
Max locks in the Scorpion Deathlock. Darby soon gets free but MJF chop blocks him. Darby counters Max and locks on the figure four. MJF struggles but flips it over. Darby breaks it with the aid of the ropes.
The two fight on the apron and MJF catches Darby with a tombstone piledriver on that apron. Max favors his knee while Darby is out. Max enters at six and Darby enters at nine.
Darby catches Max with several pin attempts until both roll on the floor in a small package. More pin attempts. Darby hits a Code Red and it’s a real deal false finish. Crowd pops.
Darby slowly ascends for a Coffin Drop once more, but MJF escapes to the outside to recoup, but Darby lands the Coffin Drop to the outside! Darby gets him back in the ring for another Coffin Drop, but Max, to his detriment, gets his knees up. MJF screams in pain. Shawn Spears comes down with Wardlow, but Sting takes both out with the bat and then Spears’ chair. Roll-up pins by both (Max grabs the trunks of course). “Fight forever” chants. MJF grabs Darby’s skateboard. He implores Darby to hit him with it. Darby contemplates and backs up, but stops. This allows Max to put on his Dynamite Diamond Ring and slug Darby with it. Headlock takedown. 1-2-3.
WINNER: MJF
