Darius Rucker On Owning One Of Ric Flair’s Trademark Robes: It Cost A Lot Of Money, But It Was Worth Every Penny

There is a very hot market for professional wrestling memorabilia, and Ric Flair‘s robes are some of the most sought-after items by fans and celebrities alike.

Country music artist Darius Rucker recently sat down with Coop of Audacy to discuss a variety of subjects. When asked about the story about how he came into the possession of one of Ric Flair’s trademark robes, Rucker told the story about how he obtained a piece of Ric Flair history:

“Yes! I do own one of Ric Flair’s robes,” Darius Rucker confirmed. “I’ll never forget this, it was at the Jimmy V [Valvano] foundation, the cancer foundation — it was at their big party and auction. I’ll never forget, I walked in and I saw the Ric Flair robe and I turned to the Hootie boys and I said, ‘I don’t care what this costs me, I’m walking out of here with that.’ It cost me a lot of money… a LOT of money, but it was worth every penny…. Right now, it’s in my closet, but I’m building a new house and so when I do that, I’m going to put it in a big display case and make it the center of my man cave. He’s the greatest of all time.”

The Hootie and the Blowfish frontman also appeared on an episode of A&E’s WWE Most Wanted Treasures in the quest to find Flair’s famed ‘Black Butterfly’ robe. Flair last wore the robe on the September 18, 1995 episode of WCW Nitro in Johnson City, Tennessee, but it had gone missing for 25 years. Thinking Rucker had the robe, Flair went to visit him and learned that Rucker was in possession of a white Flair robe, not the butterfly variant. Rucker and Flair talked how they got together at the Jimmy V event and Rucker called the robe he had the prized possession of his collectibles.

WWE ultimately found the missing butterfly robe, and Rucker’s appearance on the show ultimately spawned a parody “Hootie Had It” t-shirt in connection with the lore of the (then) missing robe.
