Edge explains why he asked for Jessika Carr as the referee for his Hell In A Cell match and shares how there’s a little bit of continuity involved.
Edge recently appeared on the Kids On The Escalator podcast and spoke about how Jessika Carr made history by serving as the first woman to referee a wrestling match in Saudi Arabia at WWE Crown Jewel.
Carr recently appeared on the Table Talk podcast and shared how Edge made the request for her to be the referee in his first match with Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, and that it continued and he asked for her to officiate the Hell In A Cell match at Crown Jewel. Speaking on Kids On The Escalator, Edge shared his side of the story and explained how he initially asked Charles Robinson for his advice and why he asked for her to be in the match in Saudi Arabia.
“I had SummerSlam coming up with Seth and Charles Robinson wasn’t going to be there. And I’m kinda at a stage in my career where I’m a little picky with who refs just because there’s a comfort level, there’s a — I don’t know, you just find a zone together. You take that out of the equation and there’s one less thing as a talent that I have to concern myself with because I know that person is going to be there,” he explained, “but Charles wasn’t going to be at SummerSlam, and I talked to him, I said, ‘What do you think about Jess? Should we give her a shot? Because I’ve watched her and she’s good. Let’s give her a high profile match and see how she does, what do you think?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah. I think it’d be a great idea.’
“So we kinda took a test run at SummerSlam and man, she is so confident and so — she’s just really, really good in there. [She] wasn’t shy, wasn’t timid, she took control of the situation and I always appreciate when somebody does that, so we had MSG and I said ‘I think you’ve got to do part two there, kiddo!’ And then when I had the discussion, they asked me about blowing off the entire story in Saudi Arabia, I wasn’t too keen on going, I’ll be perfectly honest, but then as we talked and they said ‘We need it there’, I said ‘OK, well let’s get Jess for a ref there,’ and not knowing if we’d even be able to. But I just loved the idea of a woman being in control of two men in that country, that felt pretty cool to me, and if it flew over a lot of heads, whatever, but for me,” Edge explained, “I can come back to my girls and one day tell them I went over there, but I think we did something cool and [Jess] was just right there for everything and just not in any way overwhelmed by the moment, just stood up to the challenge and it was really cool to see.”
