Paul Wight returned to the ring at AEW All Out, and he wrestled in his second match for the company a few weeks later on AEW Dark: Elevation. These bouts marked Wight’d first official in-ring action since July 2020.
During a recent appearance on the Brandon Kravitz Podcast, Wight described what it felt like to lace up his boots again. He explained that he doesn’t exactly have ring rust, but he has to retrain his brain to feel comfortable tkaing bumps again. He then stated that he’s having fun with this chapter of his career as an active competitor.
“The hard part is just telling your brain to be quiet,” said Wight. “It’s not natural to fall down, it’s not natural to take bumps and in our business, when you haven’t done it in a while, your brain’s kinda like, ‘I shouldn’t fall down.’
“But you have to just relax and remember your body knows what to do and your subconscious knows what to do and just have fun and go do to it. So yes, it’s fun to get back in the ring and have some fun wrestling, lace up my boots and get in there and rock and roll a little bit.”
Wight made his WCW in 1995, and he has subsequently enjoyed a remarkable career that has spanned over 25 years. In the interview, he joked that this longevity comes down to “blind ass luck” and his stubborn nature. He also noted that he’s enjoying his niche as a broadcaster and in-ring wrestler.
“I think I’m just, I’m very stubborn,” said Wight. “So as long as they’re paying, I’m playing. So I’ve created a little niche for myself, and I’m having fun doing the commentary thing, and I still get to go in there and act like a giant once in a while. I’m just lucky. There’s no skill to it, I promise you. There’s no secret skill set to it. I would just have to say blind ass luck [laughs].”
