Matthew Rehwoldt hints at going down a dark path in IMPACT Wrestling.
Matthew Rehwoldt recently spoke with WrestleZone about joining IMPACT Wrestling this year. His tenure has seen him aligned with Deonna Purrazzo since his arrival, but his initial vignette hinted at some darker vibes to his character. Rehwoldt previously spoke about wanting to do a take on a “tortured artist” in WWE, and he said that fans might get a sample of what he had in mind in the coming weeks on IMPACT Wrestling TV.
“I have a feeling that in the weeks and months ahead, you’ll get a little taste of it. It’s something that can be told over time, I didn’t want to come out of the gate necessarily with something so stark,” he noted, “and that character also needs time to be explained and to evolve, especially since the first thing you see me do is the tag team tournament with Deonna. I didn’t want to forcibly explain some complex, dark character in the middle of a mixed tag team tournament. So, I thought just take the opportunity, take the stage, show them who you are in the ring and stuff like that. And like I said, in the next weeks and months, we’re going to start exploring that character for sure, it’s something I’ve always wanted.”
Rehwoldt’s WWE tenure ended with a commentary role on 205 Live, something he said he was incredibly proud of and that he fell in love with more than he expected. Rehwoldt has also done commentary for New Japan Pro-Wrestling, but he says he’s focused on being an in-ring performer for IMPACT right now.
“So for right now, as far as my role with IMPACT, being an in-ring performer was the opportunity afforded and given to me but don’t get me wrong, I truly fell in love with the broadcasting side of things. I just had the honor of calling my first New Japan event, Resurgence, a couple of weeks ago and just…wow. To be able to call a Tanahashi match, Nagata and Jon Moxley in a tag-team match, things like that, were incredible. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to shy away from joining D-Lo Brown and Matt Striker in the booth and calling some IMPACT action,” Rehwoldt explained, “and maybe my tag-team partner Deonna Purrazzo is in action and needs a little extra pizzazz in the broadcast booth. But no, I really like that side, I’d like to expand and do some broadcasting outside of wrestling potentially too. So, that’s something in the business and the entertainment industry that I’m interested in.”
