The transition from Mixed Martial Arts to professional Wrestling is something Cain Velasquez always wanted to do.
The former UFC Heavyweight Champion recently appeared on the In This Corner with Cyrus Fees podcast and discussed his transition from the octagon to the ring as well as his debut in AAA.
“It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” Velasquez said of first training for professional wrestling down in Mexico. “I had two months of training before I did [AAA] Triple Mania and I was working on some stuff that I thought they might want me to do and then I got to the show and they asked what I wanted to do and I said ‘Lucha stuff’. That was stuff that I’ve never done and I practiced it the day before, the flips, the hurricaranas, all that sh**. I could’ve gone out there and done MMA stuff, but it would’ve just been too boring for me, I like to push myself and surprise people.
“So, Psycho Clown was my teammate and he was the one telling me to do all the Lucha stuff and Konan wasn’t sure about me doing it but Psycho kept saying to do it, so we did and it all worked out. It was awesome, it was so fun.”
Velasquez also reflected on how he felt he needed more time to prepare ahead of his WWE debut against Brock Lesnar in Saudi Arabia. The two stars faced off at WWE Crown Jewel 2019, but their match was over in less than two minutes.
“I wanted something bigger, obviously but it was just the scenario I was in at the moment,” said Velasquez. “Not having any experience in that world and when COVID hit and everything else, I couldn’t go in there anymore and develop. If you want a certain product out of me, you have to give me time because I’ve never done it before. I just needed more time. I was overthinking so much, you could just tell I was thinking too much. It’s just a timing and development thing.”
Velasquez briefly stated that he will return to AAA at a show in December. This appearance has not officially been announced.
