ROH Best In The World Results (7/11/21)

Main Show:

The Briscoes vs. Brian Johnson & PJ Black

Right away, the Briscoes do what they do best, and they turn the match into a brawl. Mark dives onto his opponents outside, and the brothers double-team Johnson early on. They drop him with a double shoulder block. Black tags in and takes Mark down with a diving crossbody. “The Mecca” and Black gang up on Mark.

Johnson stands up to Jay and talks trash. The two men trade blows, but Jay gains the upper hand. He drops Johnson with a neckbreaker, but Black breaks up the “Redneck Boogie.” Johnson nearly steals the win with a roll-up. Black breaks up the Doomsday Device, and Johnson nearly gets the sneaky roll-up again.

Johnson plants Jay with the Spike Eskin, and a springboard 450 splash earns him a near fall. The Briscoes rally, and Mark plants Black with a blockbuster on the floor. A Jay Driller and a Froggy Bow on Black earn the Briscoes the victory.

Winners: The Briscoes

Author’s Thoughts: The boys are back in town, as Mark and Jay Briscoe have successfully reunited. RO’s tag team division is a little thin right now, so the brothers will probably get a title shot sooner rather than later. Watching them fight on the farm and put aside their differences was a fun story, and seeing them get at least one more run with the titles would be fun. Black and Johnson were impressive, too; ‘The Mecca” held his own with two ROH originals, and he remains criminally underrated. Hopefully he’ll string together some wins soon. It was good to see Black back in action, as he had been away (other than a YouTube Exclusive match) for a few months.

EC3 vs. Flip Gordon

The two rivals shake hands, and Ec3 drops Gordon with a shoulder tackle right away. They exchange technical holds, and Gordon kips right up after a shoulder tackle. Gordon takes EC3 down with a chop block, and EC3 tells him to keep chopping him. Another shot to the knee drops EC3, but he blasts Gordon with a chop to the chest.

Gordon targets the knee in order to neutralize EC3’s power. EC3 rallies and hits the “Psycho Boy” (Lou Thesz press.) His leg is still bothering him, and Gordon capitalizes by slamming it into the ring post. EC3 keeps fighting and sends Gordon crashing to the mat with a superplex. He drills Gordon with a chop in midair and powerbombs him. A superkick rocks EC3, but he laughs it off. He hits locks in the Purpose and makes Gordon tap out.

Winner: EC3

Gordon refuses EC3’s offer of a handshake and slaps him in the face twice instead. EC3 still offers him another handshake, and Gordon spits in his face.

Author’s Thoughts: Gordon’s loss was surprising, given ROH has already announced that he’ll be challenging for the world title at Glory By Honor next month. It would have been surprising to see EC3 lose, as he lost his PPV debut to Jay Briscoe at ROH 19th Anniversary. You have to think this win will put EC3 into contention for the world title.
