New Japan Pro Wrestling has officially rescheduled Wrestle Grand Slam. The event, which was originally scheduled to take place in May, will now occur July 25 at the Tokyo Dome.
The main event will see IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Shingo Takagi defend his title against a former champion in Kota Ibushi, the same man who unified the championships earlier this year. Takagi stated he wanted his match against Ibushi to take place on the “biggest possible stage,” and arguably, there is no bigger venue for this match to take place in than the Tokyo Dome.
The Tokyo Dome has hosted some of the biggest matches in the history of New Japan Pro Wrestling. Kota Ibushi is no stranger to big matches inside the Dome, as this will be his fourth main event within that historic venue. However, for the champion, it will be Shingo Takagi’s first time competing at the Tokyo Dome, which will prove to be quite a test for the newly crowned champion.
The Wrestle Grand Slam series won’t end in the Tokyo Dome this year as New Japan will host a two-night event on September 4 and 5 in Saitama’s MetLife Dome.
This will be the first time New Japan has returned to the Metlife Dome since August 2014, which showcased the G1 Climax 24 main event where Kazuchika Okada defeated Shinsuke Nakamura. With NJPW not returning since that historical event, you have to believe that the main events of those shows have a lot to live up to in the minds of the fans.
