Sasha Banks is currently one of the most recognizable stars on WWE’s deep roster. But once upon a time, she was a developmental prospect, just like everyone else.
But even in the beginning of her journey in WWE, NXT general manager William Regal knew she was special.
In a recent interview with Matty Paddock of The Daily Star, Regal revealed that he firmly pushed for Sasha Banks. He recalled how he told WWE management they could fire him if he was wrong about Banks.
“She was the first person I went to bat for to hire, because the people who were doing the job that I do now wouldn’t even give her the time of day,” said Regal. He described how he has known Banks since she was 19, and he built a connection with her early in her career.
“I wasn’t doing this job then but in the afternoon at the shows, I’d always be training outside the ring and she’d be one of the ones who would always come and talk,” said Regal.
Regal then stated that she put on his job on the line for Banks because he was so confident in her talent.
“When it came to me getting this job… I went to them [about Sasha] and said ‘Look, if this doesn’t work out, you can fire me.'”
It’s safe to say that Regal was right about Banks, as “The Boss” has become a leading figure in WWE’s women’s evolution.
