WWE is surveying the scene in St. Pete, home of the new WWE ThunderDome. The company will soon be moving its setup from the Amway Center in Orlando to Tropicana Field, located about 2 hours south on I-75. (It’s very hot in Florida, in case you were wondering.) According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE may face two issues in the new building that were not present in their previous home.
The less pressing issue is the acoustics of the Trop. As you might guess from the name, Tropicana Field is normally home to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and the game of baseball takes much more room than basketball. This may lead to challenges for the production team, as the sounds from the show each week will be bouncing off cavernous walls.
More pressing is that there is a flock of pigeons living in the rafters of Tropicana Field, and fans of the Rays will know that they sometimes fly down and disturb the game. Will the birds attempt to descend on the matches like Sting attacking the NWO? Or, will they just leave their droppings on the audience video screens overnight? The opportunities are endlessly annoying.
WWE heads to the Trop on December 11 for that week’s episode of SmackDown, and the wrestling world’s eyes will be watching to see how the production of their weekly shows may change after the switch.
