Days before his Final Farewell at WWE Survivor Series, The Undertaker appeared on WWE’s The Bump and reflected on his legendary career. For example, he looked back on all the stipulation matches, like Casket Matches and Buried Alive matches, his character inspired. Here are some highlights.
On never thinking the stipulation matches were too crazy:
“I was just kind of honored, like all of these different matches were inspired by my character. You know, a lot of the matches with Mick Foley, I thought they were just trying to get rid of me. I was like, this is their way of saying, ‘You need to go, man,’ because some of the matches with Mick were just insane. [They] presented several challenges, too but it’s really humbling to think about the matches that are associated with Undertaker.”
“I remember sitting there with Kane when the Inferno Match was presented and you know, we’re kind of looking at each other like, ‘Hmmm.’ It happened actually that both Kane and I agree that the first Inferno Match was one of our better technical matches, and it was crazy. It was insane.”
On Casket Matches:
“I think those early Casket Matches were so pivotal in the development of the character because they were so, you’re talking about the early 90s and nothing like that was being done.”
On his jackets in the late 90s:
“That was kind of moving into the ‘Lord of Darkness’ and all that. I just wanted to keep the roots of The Undertaker, but it also had to evolve and the big motivation or the inspiration, I should say, for those type of jackets were the Hellraiser series with Pinhead. We figured out what was functional and what fit me as far as character-wise and what looked evil and how close I could get to that Pinhead character.”
