In hindsight, The Undertaker and Kane believe Roman Reigns should have been the ‘1’.
During the Brothers of Destruction documentary on WWE Network, The Undertaker and Kane spoke about The Undertaker’s fabled WrestleMania streak coming to an end at the hands of Brock Lesnar. While he didn’t agree with the decision, believing Brock didn’t need that win, both agreed putting over a younger talent like Roman Reigns would have been a better call.
Undertaker: “I thought there would be somebody like Roman [Reigns]. Roman would have been fine.”
Kane: “Yeah. I just feel that it would have made Roman—it would’ve put even more luster on that.”
Roman Reigns did beat The Undertaker three years later at WrestleMania 33 in 2017, leaving The Phenom’s record at 23-2.
During the documentary, Kane said he was shocked that the streak ended, with Taker adding that he thought he was winning until he arrived at the arena that day. Earlier this year, Undertaker spoke with CBS Sports’ Brian Campbell on the State Of Combat podcast and revealed that the decision to end his famed WrestleMania streak was debated until the last minute. He explained that the decision to end “The Streak” changed several times over the course of the week leading up to WrestleMania, and he really wanted to make sure Vince’s decision was the one he really wanted.
“Obviously, in Vince’s mindset, if it’s not Brock, then who? My biggest concern was I just wanted to make sure that [McMahon] was sure and that’s what he wanted to do. I didn’t feel like Brock needed it. Brock was already a huge star, and it wasn’t going to help him one way or another. My only concern was there might have been someone down the line that could have benefitted from it more and that probably would’ve been Roman later on.
“That’s with hindsight being 20/20. But if I was going to get beat by someone, Brock was a guy who had the credentials, I think, to do it and people would be like, ‘Um, OK, s—, that’s Brock Lesnar.’ That was my biggest deal. I just wanted to make sure that’s really what [McMahon] had wanted to do.”
