According to PWInsider, WWE has filed in opposition to two of Cody’s existing trademark applications. They argue that both “Slamboree” and “Match Beyond” are their property because of the purchase of World Championship Wrestling in 2001. Because they are exploiting the names via archival footage on WWE Network and the WWE website, they are in use and not able to be trademarked.
WWE also added that the trademarks are “indelibly linked” with WWE in the public’s mind because of their use in WCW and WWE. They finished their filing by stating that Cody’s trademark filings are “an attempt to unfairly trade on the long-standing use and recognition” within WWE.
Cody has attempted to trademark a number of WCW PPV names, as well as nicknames used by his father, the name “Cody Rhodes” and “The Prince of Wrestling.” AEW ran a special episode of Dynamite called “Bash at the Beach” early in 2020, and Cody hinted that “Match Beyond” would be the name of their War Games equivalent, which was eventually titled “Blood and Guts.”
