Rob Terry says things could have played out differently but he never got any heat backstage for taking an unprotected chair shot to the head during his TNA run.
Terry recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard ahead of the premiere of Generation Iron: Natty 4 Life, a new film documenting the life of a professional bodybuilder. Terry is featured in the film to tell his story about being a natural bodybuilder and also took some time to look back on his professional wrestling career with TNA Wrestling, which included an infamous chair shot to the head during his TNA Global Championship reign.
As seen in the clip above, Terry took an unprotected chair shot from Homicide on an April 2010 episode of TNA IMPACT. Social media was in its infancy at the time, but the strike still garnered a negative reaction online and some called it ill-advised and dangerous.
Besides Shawn Spears’ shot on Cody Rhodes in All Elite Wrestling last year, chair shots such as this have largely gone away in mainstream wrestling promotions. Terry says back then, they were starting to learn more about head injuries and head shots were starting to phase out, but no one said much to him after it when he went backstage.
“There was a lot of things about concussions and headshots, that kind of stuff, and that was something that was meant to be a little different. Maybe planned out better but it happened the way that it did, I guess it made for good TV but it was just one of those things at the time where people were very against that. I think after that there were not too many [unprotected] chair shots [to the head] that happened after that time.”
Terry said he heard a bit of chatter on the internet about not taking chair shots to the head anymore, but he didn’t receive any punishment or heat for it personally.
“I didn’t, and no one really said anything about it backstage. It was what it was and I just remember, like you said, social media was a lot smaller back then but I remember catching wind of it. There was a lot of ‘that shouldn’t be happening’ and ‘you should stay away from that’ because of everything that was going on at the time.”
