At WrestleMania 36, Curt Hawkins got his biggest win. He captured the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship alongside Zack Ryder inside MetLife Stadium in New Jersey home of the New York Jets.

Speaking on David Penzer’s podcast, Curt Hawkins tells the story of pitching Vince McMahon on wearing a New York Jets-inspired gear at the big event when he believed that Zack Ryder snd himself would be in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

“Really, Zack and I assumed we were just in the battle royal at that pay-per-view and the TV before WrestleMania, we pitched him on like an idea about… I knew if I was in the end of the battle royal, people would care and if I won, I thought it would be cool. We were just pitching some fun stuff, whatever, just to talk to him and touch base.”

He continued, “Then there was some weird thing like he was approving and disapproving everyone’s gear. I had I don’t know if you recall, I had this green, one night only, New York Jets gear in the building that they play in. It was very important to me that I wore it like I was planning it for months and Mark Carrano told me that Vince disapproved it. I was like, ‘why does he care what friggin jabroni Curt Hawkins is wearing in the battle royal? Like, who cares?’

“So, we finish our pitch and I was like, ‘Oh boss, one more thing. You didn’t approve my gear?’ We talked about it and I think I like accidentally gave them this very passionate pitch about, ‘hey man, you know, the biggest hard-luck loser in WWE is wrestling in the stadium that the biggest loser football team’s in and his hometown. You know, it’s a one-night-only thing and I kind of accidentally kind of got him really excited about that and he goes, oh, ‘God damn it, Hawkins, wear it!’ We laughed and like, that was it.”
