Byron Saxton Talks Leaving In-Ring Competition Behind, Becoming Dusty’s Assistant

Before he was a lovable loser on commentary and the star of 3:16 Day, Byron Saxton was a professional wrestler plying his trade in FCW and NXT. In a conversation with Corey Graves on After The Bell, the two on-air rivals reminisce about his transition from in-ring performer to behind the camera. Saxton remembers getting a phone call that laid it out in plain terms. If he wanted to continue to wrestle, he’d had to look for employment beyond WWE. If he wanted to stay in the company, he’d have to find a new occupation.

Byron wasn’t sure about the decision, but he eventually rolled with the punches, transitioning to the enviable position of Dusty Rhodes’ assistant. In that role, Bryon helped many current-day WWE superstars find themselves, and the commentator talked about assisting Becky Lynch, Carmella, and Angelo Dawkins with their entrances and personalities. Saxton may have never left a legacy in the ring, but his work has certainly shaped the landscape of WWE for years to come.
