Chris Jericho On Potential For Fans Returning To Live Events, If A Mike Tyson Match Needs A Crowd

Chris Jericho says crowd or no crowd, a future match with Mike Tyson has the potential to be great but the hardest part will be getting there.

Jericho recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard while promoting his new KISS-inspired band Kuarantine. During the conversation, Jericho discussed his brush up with Mike Tyson on AEW Dynamite last month and how the idea was to eventually build to a match between the two. Jericho said the match makes sense since they have prior history in WWE so it would be fun in that respect.

When asked if a fight of that magnitude “needs” to be in front of a large crowd, Jericho said he’d like that but they can figure that out once the match is ready to take place. Jericho said AEW is looking at safe ways to let fans back into their events but if that’s not a possibility, there are ways to work around it. Pointing to the Stadium Stampede match as a way how to work within the guidelines, Jericho said the match is the fun part but they just need to get to that point first.

“I would like that. Again, there’s no rush. It’s not something that we have to do next week or the week after that. Here we are in June, our next pay-per-view [All Out] is the end of August, beginning of September. I would think around then we would be able to have some people in the crowd. Once again, if we can’t, there’s ways to make it work. You saw what we did with the Stadium Stampede match, there’s a lot of different things we can do. That’s the easy part, the match is the fun part. It’s the build-up and getting it on the table. That’s probably the most difficult part, getting it on the table, the build-up and getting the most exciting build-up that you can possibly do, and the match is the payoff for that. I think everyone’s head is in the right place and everyone’s heart is in the right place to do something like this because it’s a lot of fun.

“Afterward when we finished this huge riot, mob scene—not even a pull-apart because that’s small—a spectacle. It was a giant bar fight. That’s what we wanted and that’s what we got. Everyone was very excited and you could feel that vibe and energy even though there were no fans in the venue. Still, that’s what wrestling is all about and Mike is a live performer. You just get out there and do it, it’s exciting.”
