Hours before WWE The Horror Show at Extreme Rules, Seth Rollins appeared on WWE’s The Bump. He previewed his Eye for an Eye Match with Rey Mysterio and discussed their rivalry. Here are some highlights:
On whether putting his eye on the line makes him nervous:
Rollins: “It’s certainly something that I’m not accustomed to. You know, I’ve been in matches where there’s been a lot on the line, like you said, never have I put a body part or one of my five senses on the line, and so the idea of losing my sight is not something that I’m terribly comfortable with, it’s certainly not a stipulation that I expected from Rey Mysterio, considering that he has been without an eye for a couple months now. And I don’t know why he would put himself in this situation, but I’m a little upset that he’s put me in this situation as well.”
“This is the match that Rey Mysterio asked for, I didn’t ask for this, Rey asked for this, so I am still a very merciful leader. Rey has chosen his fate, and here we are.”
On how he plans to take Rey’s eye:
Rollins: “I mean, if you follow my Twitter, I’ve had a bit of tape study over the last couple weeks. I’ve been watching my Kill Bills and studying my Vader matches, Stan Hansen technique. So yeah, we’ll see what comes of it. I can’t promise that it’s gonna be as pretty or as clean as all that. I don’t really know what this is gonna look like. This is a first time ever situation here in WWE, definitely a situation I never expected to find myself in, so, at the end of the day, it’s gonna be whatever gets the job done, whatever removes the eyeball from the socket, as gruesome as that sounds.”
On whether Rey has influenced him in his career:
Rollins: “It’s not personal, I’ve said it to Rey a million times, it’s not personal. Rey is the one who’s made it personal. To me, this is just another step to get to a brighter future. Rey Mysterio helped me get to a place that I needed to be after my loss to Drew McIntyre, at Money in the Bank, you know. I was in a really tough spot, you guys remember. I was all over the place, the memes are all over the internet, still. And I was in a tough spot, and Rey got me back to where I needed to be, and he has sought revenge ever since that day. So it’s personal to him, it’s not personal to me. Rey Mysterio is someone that I’ve always looked up to. He’s someone that I’ve always considered a hero, and I’ve said it for months and months and months. He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer. And so in that regard, I’m very much looking forward to getting into the ring with Rey Mysterio. Now, the outcome of this match is unfortunate for either me or him, and I wish it didn’t have to be that way, but this is the path that Rey has chosen.”
On whether his match with Rey Mysterio is a turning point:
Rollins: “It feels like a turning point, but not necessarily for my career, but for Monday Night RAW and the future for 2020, what the rest of this year is gonna look like. We’re heading into the summer, it’s hot, SummerSlam is coming up right around the corner, we’ve got a lot of big things going into the fall, and so it feels like there’s gonna be a shift in momentum. And I think we’re going to see after I defeat Rey Mysterio tonight, I think we’re gonna see things move in the direction that I have been building and planning and feeling for for months now.”
