WWE has invited a lot of snickering and mockery with the way it’s hyping up one of its main events for Backlash. Promoting Randy Orton vs Edge as “the greatest wrestling match of all time”, especially after they had a knockout drag down brawl at last month’s WrestleMania, just seems silly. However, WWE is all in on the promotion, complete with accompanying theme songs and announcers drilling the phrase in every Monday and Friday. One man who’s seemingly not thrilled about the whole thing is the man that has to live up to those expectations, Edge.
Speaking with ESPN in a recent interview, the Rated R Superstar said that it simply wasn’t possible to reach the heights that WWE wants him to. In fact, he doesn’t even believe in the concept:
I’ll preface all of this with saying there’s no such thing as the greatest match ever. You’re not going to be able to say definitively, what is the greatest song of all time? What is the greatest painting of all time? What is the greatest movie of all time? What is the greatest band of all time? It’s impossible because there’s no general consensus. You can have great matches, but what is the greatest is going to be different to almost everybody.
When he first found out about the match’s planned promotion, he states that he just laughed because he “didn’t think it was serious.” Then he found out that it was. “My reaction was, is this wise, because anytime you say something the greatest ever beforehand, you’re setting yourself up for failure. And I don’t ever want to think that way. I need to think the opposite of that.”
Edge feels that WWE shouldn’t be using this tagline, and blames the boss directly for it. “This shouldn’t even be happening. Let alone for the company, and let’s call it straight, Vince, to think that he can bill this the ‘Greatest Match Ever.’ Would I have preferred they not billed it as that? Absolutely. But I also know there are times where heels get dug in the sand and there’s no changing it.”
Edge and Randy Orton will try to outshine Ric Flair, Bruno Sanmartino, Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Steve Austin, Sting, AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Okada, Giant Baba, Bruiser Brody and a host of others this Sunday at Backlash in a singles match. The world will be watching.
