Drake Maverick, Kushida, and Jake Atlas all stepped into the ring tonight on NXT with a chance at facing off against El Hijo del Fantasma for the right to become interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion. In a shocking twist of events, Maverick came out on top, keeping his dreams of a title alive and getting a shot to become one next week.
Maverick came away with the win in shocking fashion, as Maverick knocked Jake Atlass off the top rope. Afterwards, Kushida landed on top of Atlas, locking him into an armbar. With Atlas locked into the submission, Maverick slowly crawled over, and with Atlas fully pulled across the mat, he threw an arm over Atlas, technically pinning him. While Atlas did tap out during the pin, the referee never saw it, and simply counted to three before declaring Maverick the winner. After the match, Kushida found Maverick backstage, and simply told him to win the title.

Atlas rolls up Kushida but Kushida kicks out. Atlas drops Kushida with an inverted suplex. Kushida kicks out. Maverick lands the acid drop on Atlas. Kushida breaks up the pin and peppers Maverick with Kawada kicks. Atlas surprises Kushida with a German suplex. Atlas goes up top and hits the rainbow DDT on Maverick. Kushida breaks up the pin by pulling Atlas out of the ring. Atlas floor Kushida with a right hand. Atlas goes back up top. Kushida cuts him off. Maverick knocks Atlas off the top rope. Kushida takes Atlas off the top with a flying armbar. While Kushida wrenches back on the hold, Maverick pins Atlas.
