Lio Rush Was Scheduled To Win Intercontinental Title At WrestleMania 35

Finn Balor defeated Bobby Lashley in an Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 35 but when speaking with Fightful, Lio Rush reveals this was not the original plan.

The idea came afloat at Elimination Chamber when Lio Rush was pinned in a handicap match by Finn Balor. Lio Rush was the hype man for Bobby Lashley at this time and was vying to earn back the respect of Bobby Lashley in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania. Lio revealed the true original plan for the big show by saying, “They were gonna have me win the title. But I forgot what happened. I forgot what happened and why that wasn’t the case. I think the idea came from Elimination Chamber, where it was me and Bobby versus Finn in like a handicap match and I think they were going to do it again at WrestleMania but I was gonna be the one to win the title and it was just gonna throw everybody off. But yeah, for whatever reason, that got scratched.”

Lio was removed from TV shortly after and did not resurface until September of 2019 when he was assigned to NXT.

Courtesy of Fightful, you can see the entire interview below in which Lio discusses the original plan in greater detail while also delving into a potential music career and why he chose to leave wrestling. Thanks to Fightful for transcriptions of the interview above.
