WWE has been intrigued by UFC’s PPV platform it appears.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE has indeed been in talks with ESPN regarding getting Vince McMahon’s content on ESPN+, the sports giant’s streaming platform. This is likely to get WWE on a PPV scale very similar to the aforementioned UFC in which a user pays $4.99 a month for the ESPN+ subscription, then $64.99 per show (this is UFC’s PPV price, not a speculated WWE price). Meltzer does report that UFC’s model for allowing it’s major shows up for ESPN adoption (and application thereof) is what opened WWE’s eyes. He also adds that WWE allowing itself to be intertwined with ESPN further would garner additional promotion in having eyes on the product as it’s an entity that ESPN carries.
It was back during the fourth quarter financial conference call when Vince McMahon told investors and stockholders that major OTTs were clamoring to have the WWE product on their platform.
“We also have an option right now, there’s no more better time, to exercise the selling of our rights to all the majors, quite frankly,” Vince would boast. “All the majors are really clamoring for our content. So that could be a significant increase, obviously, in terms of revenue.”
How would you feel about WWE’s major shows being on a streaming service? Is it “best for business?” Sound off in the comments below.
